Founded in 2011, FERNUCI SRL started as a project of Austrian and Moldovan friends to create jobs in a remote rural area, Ciuciulea, in the North of Moldova.
Land was bought and consolidated and the first partial plantation started in 2012. French walnut experts were associated to secure a modern state of the art walnut plantation, including a micro sprinkler irrigation system.
The orchard in 2023 represents 115 ha and 26 000 trees (Fernor and Chandler).
An existing factory facility was renovated for production and storage. Quality processes (HACCP) were installed to ensure premium quality walnut kernels, allowing exports to European clients in Austria and France.
In addition, Fernuci provides services for washing, drying, hand cracking and sorting, with a current processing capacity of up to 400 tons of walnuts in shell. Seasonal jobs were developed into fulltime jobs all year round.
From the very beginning, a sustainable path was taken. Friendly to the environment, Fernuci emphasizes on circular economy instead of using conventional or chemical inputs:
Walnut shells are being used as source of energy for drying walnuts and heating the buildings; locally produced compost is used as soil amendment; clover has been planted as green manure.
Fernuci has the European CERES Organic Standard Certification: MD-BIO-140
